ISBN for Self-Published Books in India: Do You Need One and How to Get It?
Every first-time author in India Googles this: Do I really need an ISBN? Can I get it free? What is this Raja Rammohan Roy agency?
Let me clear this up once and for all — as someone who has taken both free and paid ISBN routes for my own books and my students'.
What is an ISBN, Really?
ISBN is a 13-digit unique ID for your book, like an Aadhaar for books. It helps bookstores, libraries, and Amazon catalog your book correctly. Without it, your book can't be listed in many offline stores or library databases.
One ISBN = One format. So paperback, hardcover, and eBook need 3 different ISBNs. Yes, really.
Do You NEED an ISBN for Self-Publishing in India?
Short answer: Yes, if you want to be taken seriously.
- If you publish ONLY eBook on Amazon KDP: You can publish without ISBN. Amazon gives you an ASIN.
- If you want paperback on Amazon, Flipkart, or bookstores: You need ISBN. Mandatory for Notion Press distribution and for listing in Indian bookstores.
- If you want libraries, corporate bulk orders, or media features: They will ask for ISBN on your copyright page.
Free ISBN vs Paid ISBN — The Real Difference
Option 1: Free ISBN from Government (My Recommended)
India's ISBN agency is Raja Rammohun Roy National Agency for ISBN, under Ministry of Education. Website: isbn.gov.in
Steps in 2026:
- Create publisher account as Individual Author / Self-Publisher.
- Upload PAN, Aadhaar, and a declaration letter (template on site).
- Fill book details: Title, author, language, pages, format, price.
- Apply for ISBN block — you can request up to 10 ISBNs as first-time author. Usually approved in 7-12 working days.
- Once approved, you assign one ISBN to your book and upload final PDF and cover for verification.
Cost: Absolutely free. You own the ISBN and can print your imprint name like "Payal Patnaik Publishing" or your own name.
Option 2: Free ISBN from Notion Press / Amazon / Pothi
They give you free ISBN but the publisher of record is them, not you. That means on Amazon it shows "Published by Notion Press" even if you self-published. If you ever want to move to another platform, you need a new ISBN. I don't recommend this for expert authors building a brand.
Option 3: Buying ISBN
In India you cannot legally buy ISBN from private sellers. All ISBNs are free from government. Anyone charging Rs 3,000-5,000 for ISBN is just doing the free application for you and pocketing fees. Avoid.
Where to Place ISBN in Your Book
- Copyright page (usually page 4): Write ISBN-13: 978-... and your imprint name.
- Back cover barcode: Your designer will generate barcode from ISBN. Amazon KDP also generates free barcode if you don't have one.
- KDP upload: Enter ISBN during setup. Tick "My own ISBN".
Common Mistakes Indian Authors Make
- Using same ISBN for paperback and hardcover — leads to rejection on Ingram.
- Applying for ISBN before final title is locked — then you have to re-apply.
- Waiting for ISBN to start editing — don't. Apply parallel while book is in editing. It takes time, so start early.
My process: As soon as my draft goes for editing, I apply for ISBN block. By the time editing is done (3 weeks), ISBN is ready. No delay.
