Self-Publishing vs Traditional Publishing in India: Which is Right for YOU?
This is the question I get on every discovery call: Payal, should I go traditional or self-publish? The honest answer is: It depends on your goal, not your ego.
After seeing both sides — friends with traditional deals and my own self-publishing success as a World Record Author — here's the India-specific truth no one tells you in 2026.
What Traditional Publishing Really Means in India
Traditional = Penguin, HarperCollins India, Rupa, Westland, Bloomsbury India etc. You don't pay. They pay you advance (Rs 25k-1.5L for first-time non-fiction) and take care of editing, design, printing, distribution.
But: You need a literary agent or proposal, 6-12 months wait, you lose control over title, cover, price, and marketing. And royalty is 8-12% on printed price. For a Rs 399 book, you get Rs 32-47 per sale.
In India, traditional publishers currently pick only 1 in 200 proposals for non-fiction debut. Unless you have 50k+ audience or a unique data-backed concept, chances are low.
What Self-Publishing Really Means in India
Self-publishing = You are the publisher. You hire editor, cover designer, get ISBN from Raja Rammohan Roy agency, upload to Amazon KDP and Notion Press. You own 100% rights, decide price, cover, and keep 35-70% royalty.
Cost: Rs 30k-60k one-time for quality. Timeline: 30-45 days from final manuscript to live on Amazon. Control: 100% yours.
Myth: Self-published books look cheap. Reality: All my students' books are indistinguishable from traditionally published because we use same editors and designers that traditional houses use — freelancers from Reedsy.

Which is Right for YOU? Ask These 3 Questions
1. What is your goal for the book?
If goal is credibility, clients, speaking, personal brand — self-publishing wins. You need book FAST and you monetize via backend (coaching, consulting). If goal is to be in Crossword stores across India and win literary awards, try traditional.
2. Do you have time?
Traditional query process alone is 6 months. If you can wait 18 months, go traditional. If you want book in next 90 days, self-publish.
3. Do you want control?
One of my clients was asked to change her book title and remove her framework name by a traditional publisher. She said no and self-published — now her framework is her brand. If your framework matters, self-publish.
My Recommendation for Indian Experts in 2026
For 90% of coaches, consultants, therapists, founders reading this: Self-publish your first book. Build audience, get 500 sales, then use that as proposal leverage for traditional deal for book 2 if you want. This is called the "Self to Traditional" ladder. Many Indian authors like me did it.
Traditional publishing is not more prestigious anymore. A well-edited self-published book with 100 reviews on Amazon is more powerful than a traditional book that sold 800 copies and disappeared.
