Book Launch Plan for First-Time Authors: What to Do 30 Days Before & After

Payal Patnaik 9 min25 July 2026

Your book is ready to upload. Now what? If you just hit publish on KDP and post on Instagram, you'll hear crickets. I learned this the hard way with my first book. No plan, 23 sales in first month.

My second book did 400 sales in 30 days because I followed a 60-day launch plan. Here's the exact plan I now give every first-time author in India.

The 60-Day Launch Framework: 30 Before + 30 After

Think of launch not as a day, but as 60 days. Amazon algorithm rewards velocity in first 14 days. If you get 50 sales in first week, Amazon starts showing your book to more readers. No velocity = algorithm ignores you.

30 Days BEFORE Launch (Pre-Launch)

Week 4 Before: Foundation

  • Finalize KDP keywords: Use 7 KDP keywords + Publisher Rocket tool. Example: "self help books for women India", "coaching business book". Not generic "self help".
  • Create Amazon A+ Content: 3 banners with your framework, author photo, testimonials. Free on KDP, increases conversion 15%.
  • Make 10 short reels from book lessons, not "my book is coming". Teach, don't announce.

Week 3 Before: Review Army

  • Collect 40-50 people for ARC (Advance Reader Copy). Send PDF via BookFunnel. Give them 2-week deadline.
  • Create WhatsApp broadcast list for launch day. Not group, broadcast.
  • Write your launch emails: 3 emails - Story, Framework, Last chance.

Week 2 Before: Authority Assets

  • Pitch 5 podcasts: "I am launching a book on X for Indian audience, can share 3 mistakes..." Podcasts give more sales than Instagram in India for non-fiction.
  • Create LinkedIn banner with book cover, update featured section.
  • Order 20 author copies from KDP (at printing cost ~Rs 130 each) for influencers and bookstores.

Week 1 Before: Soft Launch

  • Upload on KDP but don't announce. Send link to 20 ARC readers to post honest review on Amazon.in (not .com - Indian reviews rank better for India).
  • Goal: Get 15 reviews before public launch. This builds social proof.

Launch Week (Day 0-7)

  • Day 0 (Tuesday or Wednesday best): Launch price Rs 199 eBook for 72 hours, paperback Rs 299. Send broadcast, email, LinkedIn post with personal story, not "buy my book".
  • Day 1-3: Go live on Instagram + LinkedIn audio event: 30-min Q&A from book. Give away 3 free eBooks in comments to boost engagement.
  • Day 4-7: Share screenshots of reviews, not sales numbers. Social proof sells.

30 Days AFTER Launch (Post-Launch)

Week 1-2 After: Double Down

  • Do 5 LinkedIn posts, each teaching one chapter lesson with CTA to Amazon link in comments (not post, to avoid algorithm suppression).
  • Pitch to 2 local bookstores in your city: Give them 5 copies on consignment. Take photo, tag them. Bookstores love supporting local authors.

Week 3-4 After: Leverage

  • Convert reviews into creatives: "Ritu says this chapter helped her..." - post 2x week.
  • Apply for Amazon bestseller tag: If you get 30-50 sales in 48 hours in a niche category (like Coaching Business), you can email KDP to update categories and hit #1. I have template inside Blueprint.
  • Start backend: Add "Book a call" QR code inside book to convert readers to clients.

What Not to Do

Don't spend Rs 20k on ads in first week. You need reviews first. Ads without reviews = wasted money. Don't launch on Friday or weekend — Tuesday/Wednesday gets max visibility. Don't ask friends to buy and return — Amazon tracks and penalizes.

Launch is not one post. It's 60 days of consistent visibility. Do it once properly, and your book sells for next 12 months without extra work.
