How to Market Your First Book in India and Worldwide on Amazon: The Complete 2026 Guide

Payal Patnaik 11 min9 September 2026

You finished the manuscript. You designed the cover. You hit publish on Amazon KDP.

And then... silence.

No sales. 2 reviews from your mom and best friend. You check KDP reports 10 times a day.

If this is you, listen — it's not that your book is bad. It's that first-book marketing is a completely different game from writing. Writing is about your story. Marketing is about discoverability.

And for Indian first-time authors in 2026, discoverability means playing on two chessboards at once: Amazon.in AND Amazon.com.

Let me give you the complete system I teach — before publish, launch week, and after launch — so you don't launch to crickets.

PHASE 1: BEFORE YOU HIT PUBLISH (The 80% That Decides Your Sales)

Most authors focus 100% on writing and 0% on KDP setup. That's why their book never gets seen. Amazon is a search engine. If you don't tell it who your book is for, it won't show it to anyone.

1. Why You MUST Publish on Both Amazon.in AND Amazon.com (And How)

Here is a stat that changes everything: For most Indian non-fiction authors I work with, 65-75% of their KDP income comes from Amazon.com, .co.uk, .ca, .com.au — not Amazon.in. Why? Because US/UK readers pay $2.99-$4.99 (₹250-415) and buy more non-fiction, while Indian market is still price-sensitive at ₹199-299.

Good news: When you publish via KDP (kdp.amazon.com), you automatically get distribution to all Amazon marketplaces worldwide. You don't need separate accounts. But you MUST optimize for both.

What to do:

  • In KDP pricing, set both INR and USD pricing. Don't leave USD pricing on auto.
  • India: ₹199-299 for 120-180 page non-fiction. ₹299-399 if you have strong credentials.
  • US/Worldwide: $2.99 to $4.99 sweet spot. $2.99 is the minimum to get 70% royalty. At $0.99 you only get 35%.
  • Enroll in KDP Select? KDP Select gives you Kindle Unlimited (KU) page reads and 5 free promo days every 90 days. For India, KU is growing FAST — especially in self-help, career, finance. If your book is non-fiction under 200 pages, I recommend KDP Select for first 90 days. You can opt out later and go wide to Google Play Books. Cons: You cannot sell ebook elsewhere while in Select.

2. The 7 Kindle Keywords — India vs US Difference

KDP allows 7 keyword boxes. This is your SEO goldmine. Most authors write "self help, motivation." That's wasted.

India keywords are often: "how to become author in India", "career growth India", "personal branding India"

US keywords are: "how to write your first book", "author branding coach", "personal branding for professionals"

You need a mix. My method:

  • Boxes 1-3: US intent keywords (what Americans search)
  • Boxes 4-5: Indian intent keywords
  • Boxes 6-7: Problem + audience keywords (e.g., "first time author guide", "book writing for working professionals")

Use Publisher Rocket or even free: Amazon search bar autocomplete. Type your topic and see what Amazon suggests in .in and .com separately.

3. The 2 Categories Trick

Amazon lets you choose 2 BISAC categories, but you can actually get into 8-10 categories via keywords and by emailing KDP support. For Indian authors, I always suggest:

  • One broad category (e.g., Self-Help > Personal Growth)
  • One niche, low-competition category (e.g., Business > Authorship)

To add extra categories: After publishing, email kdp-support@amazon.com with: "Please add my book ASIN XXX to these categories: [list 8 categories]." They usually do it in 24 hours. This is how you become a #1 bestseller in a small category, which gives you the orange bestseller badge — social proof that boosts conversions in both India and worldwide.

4. Author Central Setup on .IN and .COM — Don't Skip

This is non-negotiable and 90% of Indian authors miss it.

You need to set up Author Central on BOTH:

  • authorcentral.amazon.in
  • authorcentral.amazon.com

Why both? Your Author Page with photo, bio, and all your books shows up differently. An NRI in New Jersey checking Amazon.com will see your .com profile. Your LinkedIn audience in Delhi will see your .in profile.

Add: Professional photo (not selfie), bio with keywords, link to your website/Instagram, and link all your books. This builds E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) for Amazon's algorithm.

5. A+ Content for Non-Fiction (Your Mini Landing Page on Amazon)

If you write non-fiction, you can add A+ Content — visuals, comparison charts, author story — on your Amazon book page. It's free inside KDP. Use it to show: Who this book is for, What they'll learn (3-5 bullets), About Author, and 1 testimonial. This increases conversion by 15-20%. Most Indian KDP books don't use it, so you'll stand out instantly.

Phase 2: Launch Week — The First 30 Days Decide Your Rank

Amazon's algorithm watches your first 30 days like a hawk. Good sales + reviews in first 7-10 days = Amazon starts showing your book to more people. No sales = it buries you.

1. How to Get Your First 20 Reviews Ethically (No Paid Reviews)

Paid reviews will get your account banned. Don't do it. Instead, build an ARC (Advance Review Copy) team 3 weeks before launch:

  • WhatsApp: Make a broadcast list of 30-40 people who genuinely know you — ex-colleagues, college friends, LinkedIn connections. Message personally: "Hey, my first book is launching on [date]. Would you be willing to read early copy and leave an honest review on launch day? No need for 5 stars, just honest."
  • LinkedIn: Post a story "Looking for 20 early readers for my book on [topic] — comment 'ARC' if you want early copy." You'll get 15-20 comments easily.
  • Send PDF (not final mobi) via Google Drive with clear instructions: "Please review on Amazon.in AND Amazon.com if possible. Search book by title, don't use direct link for first few reviews (Amazon tracks)."

Aim: 10 reviews in Week 1, 20 by Day 15. Even 7-8 reviews make a huge difference for new author.

2. Launch Price Strategy

Don't launch at full price. Launch at ₹99 / $0.99 for first 3-5 days, then increase to ₹199 / $2.99. Why? Low price reduces friction for first buyers. Announce: "Launch price ₹99 for first 100 readers." This urgency drives action.

After you get 10+ reviews, use KDP Free Promo Days (if in KDP Select) — 2 days free. This can get you 500-1000 downloads in US, which boosts your Amazon rank drastically and gets you more KU reads later.

3. The Indian Launch Stack (What Actually Works in 2026)

Forget fancy funnels. For first book in India, this stack works:

  • WhatsApp Broadcast (Day 0, 2, 5): 3 messages — Announcement, Social Proof (first review screenshot), Last day launch price. Not spam. Personal.
  • Instagram: 5 Stories/day for 3 days (behind-the-scenes writing, unboxing, review screenshots), 1 Reel: "3 reasons I wrote this book" — this Reel brings non-followers.
  • LinkedIn: 2 posts — Post 1: Your vulnerable story (why you wrote), Post 2: Carousel with 5 learnings from book + Amazon link in comments (LinkedIn suppresses external links in post).
  • 3 Podcast Pitches: Search "Indian author podcasts", "career podcasts India" on Spotify. Pitch: "I recently authored [Book Title] on [Topic] and help working professionals become authors — happy to share 3 mistakes first-time authors make." Podcasts give you evergreen discoverability.

Phase 3: After Launch — Build A Visibility System, Not A One-Time Launch

Most Indian authors launch and then go silent. That's mistake #1. A book is not an event. It's an asset. You need a system.

1. Content Bank from Your Book

Your book has 15-20 LinkedIn posts, 10 Instagram carousels, 5 Reels hidden inside it. Example: Chapter 3 is about "Ugly First Draft." That's a LinkedIn post: "I wrote 800 ugly words today..." Every chapter = content. I make my authors create a 30-day content bank from their book before they publish. So after launch, they are not scrambling for content. They are repurposing.

2. Amazon Ads — Even ₹200/Day Works in India

Amazon Ads in India are still cheap (₹5-15 per click vs $0.50-1 in US). Start with:

  • Sponsored Product Ad: Automatic targeting, ₹200/day budget, for your main keywords. Let it run 14 days. You will see which keywords convert.
  • Worldwide: Once you have 15 reviews, run US ad at $5/day on 5 exact keywords. Even 1-2 sales/day from US at $2.99 royalty = $60/month passive, plus rank boost.

3. Goodreads Giveaway + Corporate Workshops

  • Goodreads Giveaway: List your book on Goodreads, run a giveaway of 5 print copies (you can do Kindle). This gets you on the radar of readers worldwide. Goodreads audience is US-heavy, perfect for your .com sales.
  • Corporate Talks in Gurgaon/Delhi NCR: This is my secret for Indian authors. Your book is your business card. Pitch to HR/L&D heads: "I can do a 60-min workshop on Personal Branding / Storytelling for your team, based on my book [Title]." Companies pay ₹15k-50k for author-led workshops. Your book sells 30-50 copies at each event. I have authors who made more from workshops than royalties.

3 Mistakes Indian Authors Make (And How To Avoid)

Mistake 1: Only Focusing on Amazon.in

You are leaving 70% money on table. Optimize for .com from Day 1. Your book deserves a global reader.

Mistake 2: No Email List

Instagram can shadowban you. LinkedIn algorithm can change. But email list is yours. Even a simple Google Form: "Get my free chapter + author tips." Collect 100 emails in launch week. Send 1 email/week with a story from book. When Book 2 launches, you have 500 people ready.

Mistake 3: No System After Launch

You did launch week hustle, then stopped. Amazon rewards consistency. Schedule: 2 LinkedIn posts/week from book, ₹200/day Amazon ad, 1 podcast pitch/week. That's 3 hours/week. This keeps your book visible for 12 months, not 12 days.

Your Next Step

Marketing is not sleazy. It's service. If your book can help one person get promoted, write better, or believe in themselves, hiding it is selfish.

Here's what to do today:

1. Download my Book Visibility Checklist — 21-point checklist I use for every author launch (KDP setup, ARC team, launch stack). Free below.
